NHC Player Support Fund

In 2018 NHHA allowed the funds that had previously been put aside for International Guest Player (IGP) use were opened to be used as a support fund for team improvement that benefited local players.   

With the change in the competition format seeing what was known as the National Hockey League (NHL) now becoming the National Hockey Championships (NHC) there have been some changes to the tournament format and rules that have seen the need to update how this fund can be utilised.  

Under the HNZ Tournament rules “Appendix 6” the use of International Players is not allowed for the National Hockey Championship Tournament.  

After a challenging year for all sports organisations in 2020 NHHA do wish to continue to support our players that give back for us and the Player Support Fund will continue in 2021. Funds can be used to support the following player types (descriptions below), in no order:  

  • North Harbour Black Sticks (NHBS) 
  • Harbour Player of Value (HPV) 
  •  

NB: Support is to reduce the cost of the participants fee to NHHA not to cover the cost of other travel or expenses for them to be involved. In previous years this fund has been used to cover flights for those who were only making themselves available for said parts of the tournament or build up. NHHA will no longer support this.
 

North Harbour Black Stick (NHBS) 

A NHBS is someone who’s Home of origin is the North Harbour Association and or a Black Stick who has moved to the North Harbour Association who has made significant volunteer contribution within NHHA. Volunteer contribution can include coaching and/or management of rep teams, umpiring or support towards events and programmes that are agreed to have had a clear impact. 

 

Harbour Player of Value (HPV) 

A HPV is one that has played at the highest domestic level for a significant period of time and lives out our organisational values. They must have achieved 7+ years NHL experience for NHHA or 7+ years NHL experience across associations and significant volunteer contribution within NHHA. Volunteer contribution can include coaching and/or management of rep teams, umpiring or support towards events and programmes that are agreed to have had a clear impact. 

 

Use of Fund Process 

NHHA will open this fund to the selected playing group to apply for following the selection of the NHC Premier sides in 2021. The NHHA Talent Development Officer (TDO) and Hockey Development Manager (HDM) to then sign off and approve successful candidates. 

A reminder that the current fee structure and estimated player make up currently exists in table below.


NB: Estimations are made based on previous NHL campaign 2019 and are inclusive of GST

To be transparent the below table shows a breakdown of contributions linked to the cost of the NHL experience and shows a % contribution of where funds come from.

Selection Criteria Considerations – The below must be applied for NHHA to consider fee reductions.  

  • All players (including NHBS) will cover the cost of food and rep levy and at minimum 20% of their accommodation – $497.80 
  • No HPV player(s) will receive a reduction in fees that exceeds NHBS 
  •  HPV must be an active player within our local club competition 
  • HPV must have 7+ years NHL/NHC experience for NHHA or 7+ years NHL/NHC experience across regions and significant volunteer contribution within NHHA
  • Person must fit the Harbour values. 

NB: If the number of people that qualify to access the fund exceeds the budget available all NHBS will receive the agreed fund reduction (NHBS to cover rep levy, food costs & 20% of accommodation cost) and the remaining balance will see an even discount applied to all HPV players.

Reminder 1: Meeting criteria does not guarantee a discounted campaign; it allows consideration.

Reminder 2: This fund is only to be used for the intended purposes, if the fund limit is not reached the funds available are not to be repurposed to any other area of the budget.
