Year 1/2 Small Sticks (HBC only)

  • The objective is to introduce players to the game of hockey and to help them develop basic individual skills including grip, dribbling, ball control, passing, receiving, tackling, basic elimination, and distribution. Additional team concepts to develop are space awareness, vision, and calling.

  • No year 3/4 or year 5/6 players are permitted to play in this grade.

  • Game start times are between 4.00 pm and 6.00 pm approx.

  • Game Play: 13 minute training session (all players involved) and 13 minute game (Maximum of 4 players plus one adult on 1/8 turf – No goalkeepers)

  • The role of the adult is to help the game retain the structure and encourage all players to be involved in the game.

    • Remember that a child scoring a goal will take more enjoyment from the game, than a parent stopping a goal.

  • Offered at Hibiscus Coast (Metro Park) Only.

North Harbour Hockey offers a range of Winter Competitions for Primary School students so that players of all ages & levels can receive a world-class hockey experience.

The competition runs throughout Term 2 & 3 and is played at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium and games are played on Mondays.

Game offerings: Boys, Girls & Open Grades.

All competitions will include an element of grading to help group teams.

Game Duration: All games are 30 minutes.

Teams are entered through your Primary School, please contact your school teacher in charge.

PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPETITION

11 aside competition

  • Days of Play:

    • 11 Aside Boys – Wednesday

    • 11 Aside Girls – Thursday

  • Premier grade will be played over a full winter season (15-Weeks).

    • Format: 8 Teams, double round robin (14-weeks), plus finals (15-weeks competition).

    • 8 Teams include: Top 6 teams from 2021 Supercity Premier automatically qualify for the 2022 Premier grade. Plus, both winners from the promotion/relegation games.

    • Promotion/relegation games will be played between 7th and 8th in SC Premier and 1st and 2nd in SC A1 2021 Grades.

      • Winners of promotion/relegation games will play in the Premier grade for 2022 and losers play in the Auckland Grade A or NHHA Grade 1.

    • Premier grades will play 15-minute quarters (2-minute break and 3-minute half time).

  • All NHHA grades

    • Round 1: will continue to start with a 6-week competition with promotion/movement occurring at the end of the round.

      • Teams will move according to their placings at the end of round 1.

    • Round 2 will play an 8-week competition.

    • NHHA grades will play 15-minute quarters (2-minute break and 3-minute half time).

  • Greater Auckland A1

    • Round 2: Will start on the 15th and 16th of June for 8-weeks

    • Format: 8 Teams, single round robin (7-weeks) and finals (8-week competition).  

    • 8 Teams include: Top 4 teams from NHHA Grade 1 & Top 4 teams from Auckland Grade A,

    • Greater Auckland A1 grades will play 15-minute quarters (2-minute break and 3-minute half time).

North Harbour Hockey offers a range of Winter Competitions for Secondary School students so that players of all ages & levels can receive a world-class hockey experience.

The competition runs throughout Term 2 & 3 and is played at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium.

Competition start times: All game start times are between 4.00 - 6.20pm

Games are 60 minutes in duration.

Teams are entered through your Secondary School, please contact your school teacher-in-charge. Children must play for the school they attend.

Competition Entries are managed via CollegeSport.

secondary SCHOOL COMPETITION

year 7/8 kwik sticks

  • 2022 Junior Hockey Change: To ensure NHHA provides our junior athletes with age-appropriate formats in line with the Small Sticks modified games framework, the following format changes will be implemented for the 2022 winter competition. Yr. 7/8 Intermediate 11-aside grade changes to a 7-aside competition played on a half field.

  • Available to year 7/8 girls and boys only.

  • Maximum of 7 players on 1/2 turf.

    • Goal Keepers: Due to the timeliness of the Junior Hockey Change, for the 2022 season goalkeepers are not compulsory however are highly recommended and encouraged by NHHA.

      • In 2023 goalkeepers will be compulsory

  • Location: Only offered at Albany. The Intermediate competition will be played at the Albany venue. If overflow venues are required the below turfs may be used:

    • Hibiscus Coast (Metro Park)

    • Westlake Girls High School

    • Kirstin School

    • Mahurangi Hockey Turf

The competition runs throughout Term 2 & 3 and is played at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium and games are played on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Competition start times: All competition start times are between 4.00 and 7.00pm.

Game Duration: All games are 60 minutes. Will consist of 12 minute quarters.

North Harbour Hockey offers Adult Winter Hockey Competitions across a range of Grades so that players of all ages & levels can receive a world-class hockey experience.


Players can play for any club of their choosing; that choice is solely up to each player on an individual basis.


Club trials will be held on 10 & 11 February and 17 & 18 February 2024.

Club (Adult) Winter Competition run from March to August, games are played on Saturdays & Sundays and are 70 minutes in duration
